Letters of R.L. Brown [manuscript], 1856-1861.

Brown writes to an unidentified circuit court judge, 1861 February 4, from Washington predicting the creation of a Southern confederacy but maintaining that Virginia and four other border slave states will be held in the Union and forced to abolish slavery. He denounces General Scott, says Washington is under martial law, predicts the failure of the Washington Peace Conference, and ends with personal news. In an unrelated letter, 1856 October 4, M.B. Poitiaux, Wheeling, [West] Virginia, notifies James C. Clarke, Greensburg, Pa., of a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Hempfield Railroad.
